BS : Collaborative Business Relationship Management Systems is the successor to PAS and provides a useful and practical framework that, when put in place, leads to collaborative business relationships for the mutual benefit of all involved.
BS involves an eight-stage process to relationship management that is purposefully designed to encourage knowledge sharing throughout the organisation, with suppliers and clients and the implementation of mutually agreed objectives. People have been collaborating in various ways for many years, but with recent difficult market conditions organisations increasingly need to look at new ways of diversifying and partnering. BS is the answer to a new, dynamic and effective way to partner in business.
By harnessing the stages outlined it has been suggested that organisations are able to better develop sustainable working relationships with all stakeholders. The standard enables an organisation to clarify its business objectives so that achieving them will benefit the complete business. Involved in BS is a thorough assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation and analysis of the employee performance and collaborative capabilities, which results in a founded mutual business partnership.
In the case of NATS, the individuals who utilised the BS standard were customer relationship managers and procurement managers, in order to improve relations with their suppliers. The standard was heavily used by managing directors who had a keen interest in harnessing the BS stages in order to provide oversight and leadership when improving business collaborations. We were delighted to be the first organisation in the facilities management sector to be awarded certification to the new British Standard.
In fact, all employees who are part of the supply chain process will benefit from using BS ; this is to ensure sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships are maintained with both current key customers and potential members of the supply chain.
BS demonstrates how valuable and important effective collaboration is. Therefore, all those involved in not only the supply chain but also client relationship management should utilise this new standard, as they are directly involved in ensuring customer confidence and collaborative working.
There are several reasons that why BS should be implemented by organisations. The most overriding and possibly commercial reason is the competitive advantage gained through effective collaborative working. Supported by the standard, organisations are able to successfully pitch together for tenders, eg by working together on one pitch, instead of against each other, they strengthen the overall offering for their client and this helps set them apart from the competition.
BS could also be implemented to support the growth of a business, as it clearly demonstrates to future clients, customers and stakeholders that the organisation has excellent collaborative capabilities and practices in place.
These collaborative procedures can also help accelerate business growth by improving the offering, as well as the opportunity for external business wins. Not only does communicating the fact that your organisation follows the BS certification provide for a competitive advantage, there are several other benefits to be gained from implementing this voluntary standard.
Effective collaborative relationship management can enable organisations to better achieve their business objectives and it is BS that shows organisations how to do this. However, for collaborative partnerships to be successful the right partner has to be selected, where the business objectives of both organisations can complement each other.
Another benefit is that the initial stages provide the framework for selecting the right partner. In addition, the methods outlined enable the organisation to evaluate whether it is more beneficial to collaborate with more than one partner. Ultimately, the best possible service offering to potential customers and clients can be communicated via upholding the BS certification.
This demonstrates a strong commitment to collaborative working and instils immediate and long-term confidence in potential new partners. The BS works at three levels: strategically, on levels of engagement, and on a management level.
These three levels form the framework for the 10 clauses, or stages, in the standard, and organisations can benefit at each stage. Those that follow the BS guidelines can benefit from:. It has been found that the partnership, when collaborating, can become more valuable for both parties when BS is implemented. One reason is that the methods for the initial partner selection process, outlined in this standard, ensure that a robust assessment of the current performance and collaboration capabilities is carried out.
This ensures that only the best potential relationships with organisations and individuals will form; hence setting up the very best foundation for a business partnership. As a result, Network Rail now considers BS as one of the tools it can use to improve how the organisation works with its supply base, and to deliver better value for money.
Maintaining collaborative business relations can only lead to benefits for Network Rail and its suppliers, for the rail industry and for Britain. A higher quality of performance feedback has also been gained through implementation of BS This is due to how the collaboration adds a new dimension to the work of both organisations.
For example, employees are actively encouraged to suggest alternative processes or new ideas to boost performance, and measures are drawn up to monitor the relationship as it grows. Thus, feedback is used to drive continual improvement for both partners involved in collaborating, which results in long-standing mutual benefit for all parties. By implementing BS , EMCOR Group proclaims that it not only benefits from a collaborative approach but believes it is better equipped with the knowledge, skills, processes and resources to meet mutually defined objectives, on a global scale.
The third key experience to be found by those implementing BS is that more effective dispute resolution is now possible. Steps 8 to 10 of this standard offer excellent guidance for arranging a dignified exit from any collaboration, even at the outset.

Although every relationship is different, whether vertical or horizontal, the key issues will be common to most at a strategic, management and engagement level. It is these key factors that BS captures and thus provides a common and consistent foundation for collaboration for all organisations.
