View 1 comment. It feels like it is essentially about a compatibilist message of how to have free will within rules of determinism. Freedom within rules feels like Jewish cultural phenomenon, yet the story is juxtaposed in Hindu culture? Not sure I agree with all the "arguments" proposed, when Virata goes from one life style to the next.

It seems that the omission of actions is actions too, yet he only realizes it very late and in a vague manner. Also, the question of fairness and keeping "bad" people out It feels like it is essentially about a compatibilist message of how to have free will within rules of determinism.

Also, the question of fairness and keeping "bad" people out, is never answered. You don't have to be utilitarian about it, but it would have felt nice to see some principles put out. A little bit moralistic, but I like Zweig.

The translation is also very good, so all in all, enjoyable. There is no place for "Good". The author tried to give the gist of The Geeta in this book. A bit too dramatic though. And towards the end Stefan Zweig reveals the bitter truth of the society.
